Charge the first two items to a one-liter three-neck round-bottom flask equipped with a thermometer, inert gas line, and stirrer. Heat the contents of the flask under a nitrogen blanket to the exotherm temperature (250-280 F). Turn the heat off at this point and after the exotherm is expended hold the reaction at 350-375 F for 0.5 h. Add the "Acintol" FA-2 tall oil fatty acids and sodium carbonate and heat the batch to 500 F. Hold this temperature until an acid number less than one is attained in the reaction mixture. Allow the batch to cool to 370 F and then add the phthalic anhydride. Hold 360-370 F for 15-20 min to allow the half ester of the phthalic anhydride to be formed, then quench the batch to 80% N.V. with butyl "Cellosolve" and discharge it from the reaction flask.
