For etching a design or lettering on glass, it is first necessary to apply a thin even coating of some waxy substance which will resist the etchant. The lines are then marked in the wax with a needle thus exposing the glass to the action of an etching agent which iss applied afterward. Etching can be done with hydrofluoric acid either as a vapor or as a solution in water, but also with an ammonium fluoride or ammonium bifluoride solution or any of the many known mixtures with other soluble salts in solution. Often the etching is done with a paste made of hydrofluoric acid and barium sulfate powder. An easy method for making smooth uniform mat etchinngs with beautiful sharp borderlines is the following: Dip a hair or felt brush first in concentrated hydrofluoric acid solution diluted with water until the liquid ceases to develop fumes, then dip the brush in finely ground fluorspar powder and apply to the exposed glass. After etching, rinse the glass carefully with water to remove all traces of the et
