Cream sugar and shortening together. Add eggs gradually. Sift salt, baking powder, and flour and add at low speed. Pin out dough in strips 4 inches wide and 0.25-inch deep, to the width of the baking sheet. Fill the baking sheet with these strips. Crimp the sides. Cover the center liberally with fig jam. Cut strips of dough 4 inches long and 0.25-inch wide, criss-cross these over the jam and press into the edges of the dough. Bake at 400'F. When baked, cut into strips about 1.5 inches wide.
