Mix Cellulose Gum with one-fifth of the combined humectants. Preheat water to 70-80'C, then add it to the wetted gum with rapid stirring. Add remainder of the humectants. a When soap is used as a foaming agent, it is added to the gum solution, heating if necessary, for complete solution. Cool the entire mixture to room temperature and transfer to a Werner-Pfleiderer mixer. Add the saccharin solution, oil of peppermint, and mineral oil while mixing the gum solution. b When synthetic detergent is used rather than soap, it is added at this point while mixing the gum solution. The abrasive is added slowly, allowing it to disperse well. After the abrasive is added, mix until the paste appears homogeneous, usually from fifteen to sixty minutes.
