100 kg mechanical hemp is treated for 30 minutes at 95'C with 2500 liters 0.1% aqueous sodium hydroxide containing 0.05% sodium hydrosulfite; washed, treated for 30 minutes at normal temperature with 2500 liters 0.02% aqueous hydrochloric acid; washed, treated for 1 hour at normal temperature with 2500 liters 0.08% chlorine water; then washed and treated for 30 minutes at normal temperature with 2500 liters 0.04% aqueous sodium sulfite. After a final washing, an excellent fiber is obtained in 68% yield. By using hydrogen peroxide instead of sodium sulfite or bisulfite, an improved color is obtained.
