Emulsify the polyvinyl acetate in an equal amount of water containing the polyvinyl alcohol as an emulsifying agent. Heat the "Vinsol" with the dibutyl phthalate and benzene at 55-60'C. to form a smooth solution (10-15 minutes). then this "vinsol" solution is slowly added in alternate increments with the remaining water to the stirred polyvinyl acetate emulsion. When using a mechanical stirrer at 3,000-12,000 rpm, time required for adding the "Vinsol" solution is usually 10-15 minutes. During this time, as the emulsion thickens, the stirring speed is increased. Stable emulsions of 45-65 per cent solids are readily obtained.
