Charge reaction flask with dioxane, oxalic acid, and formic acid, and heat. Add para-phenylphenol slowly, so as not to solidify the mass in the reactor, while heating. continue heating after all the para-phenylphenol has been added, to 110'C. Allow 95-98% of the paraphenylphenol to dissolve in the dioxane, which will require some 10-15 min. Add flake paraformaldehyde. Reflux gently at 106'C for 9 hr. Dehydrate at atmospheric pressure to 204'C. Check yield at 204'C and pour.
