Mix about 20% of the glycerin with the cellulose in a mortar; add some water, mix well, and add the rest of the water, mixing slowly. Let stand for a few hours and then mix with the balance of the glycerin. This yields a homogeneous, odorless product with a soft petrolatumlike consistency. It absorbs 6.7% of water vapor in 26 days if exposed to air. After such water absorption it does not lose its consistency. At -5'C. it does not lose its consistency, but at 50-'C. it softens somewhat. The new carboxymethyl cellulose glycerin base is stable, showing no decomposition 6 months after its preparation. This base has been substituted for the bases of a number of ointments and no changes were noted in preparations made with a variety of dermatological medicaments. This new base is not harmful to the skin, is washable, and has a desirable pH. Ointments made with it are soft, easy to spread and compound with other substances.
