Purina Protein/50 pH= 10.5 Flush mixing tank clean with water and drain empty. Any residual silicate will coat the protein with a gelatinous film which cannot be readily dispersed and must be discarded. Add 240 lb (28.8 gal.) water to mixing drum (22 1/4'' dia.) With agitator running, add 50 lb (1 bag) Purina Protein slowly to prevent lumping and continue mixing. Add 10 lb pearl starch slowly, sifting to prevent lumping and mixing until the entire mixture is smooth. Add 55 lb (4.74 gal) sodium silicate very rapidly anticipating thickening of the mix when only part of the silicate is present, and thinning rapidly as the full amount is dispersed. Continue mixing for at least 15 min to break down this dispersion which stabilizes at a relatively thin viscosity. Add 100 lb (2 bags) kaolin clay slowly to prevent lumping, agitating continuously for 5 min. Add 1 oz sodium sulfite while continuing agitation. Add 50 lb (1 bag) "Purina" Protein slowly sifting to prevent lumping and continue mixing 5-15 min until entire mixture is smooth. Add 48 lb (4 gal) sodium silicate very rapidly, anticipating thickening of the mix when only part of the silicate is present and thinning rapidly as the full amount is dispersed. Continue mixing for about 15 min to break down the dispersion which stabilizes at a relatively fluid viscosity.
