Foaming Procedure (No-Gel Type) The latex and water are mixed together with a Lightning Mixer, and the pH adjusted to 10.7 with ammonium hydroxide solution. Product E-413 is added, and the pH readjusted if necessary to 10.7. Sodium hexametaphosphate solution is added slowly to the mixture. Filler, hydrated alumina, zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate, and zinc MBT are premixed and this mixture is slowly sifted into the liquid latex mixture. Mixing is continued for about 15 min to insure uniformity, whereupon the sodium lauryl sulfate and the vulcanizer compound are added and mixing is continued for about 5 min. The compounded latex is now transferred to a Hobart mixer so that air may be whipped into the latex to produce foam. A Hobart Model 4-C can be used for laboratory scale batches. Speed settings for 2 min each at 6, 4, and 2 positions (in that order) produce the required whipping action. The foamed compounded late is now quickly applied to the back of carpet swatches by doctoring with a 1/8-1/4 in. gu
