charge fatty acid, trimethylol propane, and isophthalic acid to reaction kettle. heat rapidly with agitation to 177 C (350 F) where esterification begins. heat over a 3 h period to 238 C (460 F) and hold for acid number of 10. cool to 182 C (360 F), add TMA and hold at 171-177 C (340-350 F) for proper cure time and/or acid number. cool to 163 C (325 F) and reduce with cosolvent. if hard resin modification is desired, 5% resin dissolved in butyl cellosolve may be added while reducing.
