mix polybutene with oleic acid and triethanolamine in a high-speed, shear mixer such as a xowles dissolver. add water slowly until inversion occurs. add remaining water more rapidly. preheating both the polymer mixture and the water facilitates emulsification. with the higher viscosity polymers (> 175 cs @ 99 C), temperatures of 65-90 C may be necessary. premixing the triethanolamine with eight parts of water, adding this solution to the polymer/oleic acid mixture, and then adding remaining water may also facilitate emulsification.
