soaps are made fron a fat or fatty acid and an alkali. they lathetr and produce a foam which entraps dirt and grease. there are many kinds of soaps. cleaners contain a solvent, such as naphtha, with or without a soap. abrasive cleaners are soap pastes containing powdered pumice, stone, ailica, etc.

the caustic soda is dissolved in the water. then the starch is made into a thick paste by adding a portion of this solution. the paste is then added to the water.the resulting mixture is placed on a water bath and heated to about 85 C,until alltje starch grantles have broken. the temperature is maintained aout 1/2 h longer adt 85 C. the other substances are then added and thoroughly mixed. less water may be used if applied hot and tdhen a thicker coating eill result.
