Proparation of pigment paste: With stirring, add "Surfynol" TG surfactant; "Tamol" 731, potassium carbonate, and the pigments to 165 parts of water containing 33 parts of 3% "Methocel" solution. Grind in a pebble mill for 14 h. The viscosity should be 70-90 KU. For other grinding equipment, adjust the viscosity as desired by using more or less water. Let down: Transfer a weighed amount of the ground paste to a vessel equipped with a stirrer. With stirring, add the polyvinyl acetate emulsion, ethyl "Carbitol" and water to the paste. Adjust the viscosity by adding the "Methocel" solution or an equal amount of water. Adjust the pH to 7.5 or 8 by adding NH4OH if necessary. Note: In a small operation, as in the laboratory where the percentage loss of paste in transfer is large, the amounts of ingredients added during let down must be reduced proportionately to take into account the transfer loss.
