This caustic soda is dissolved in the water. Then the starch is made into a thick paste by adding a portion of this solution. The paste is then added to the water. The resulting mixture is placed on a water bath and heated to about 85C; until all the starch granules have broken. The temperature is maintained about 1/2 hr longer at 85C. The other substances are then added and thoroughly mixed. Less water may be used if applied hot and then a thicker coating will result.
