First, turpentine is swabbed onto the picture to protect the paint. Then, with a different swab, "Tergitol" Anionic 4 is applied in a rolling motion. Finally, every last trace of "Tergitol" Anionic 4 is removed by wiping with swabs soaked in naphtha. Swabs are made by rolling cotton on the ends of applicators. The entire operation is performed with great care. Only small areas are cleaned at a time. "Tergitol" Anionic 4 may be used full strength or may be diluted to as little as a 1 or 2% solution. the concentration that works best can be determined by experimenting along the narrow edge of the picture that will be concealed by the frame.
