Glazing dull Plastic Casts

Dull-surfaced phenolic plastic moldings or casts can be given a durable, ceramiclike glaze finish with this simple brush-coating technique.
First, mix a small quantity of liquid phenol-formaldehyde casting resin with a few drops of catalyst. A good catalyst for this work can be made by mixing 1 part hydrochloric acid with 5 to 10 parts glycerin, by weight. Thin to coating consistency by adding small quantities of alcohol to the resinous mixture. Then, using a good paint brush of proper size, coat the surfaces of the casting.
The brush coating can be rapidly solidified and fused on dull plastic surfaces with the heat from an infrared lamp. In addition to yielding a high-gloss finish, the coating will cover pinholes and other small defects on the cast plastic article.
