Procedure: The triethanolamine and the oleic acid should be added first into a heavy-duty mixer and mixed until completely reacted into a clear gel-like soap. The preheated plasticizer-tackifier is then added (heating if necessary) with continuous mixing. This is followed by the pigment and mixed until uniform. The major portion of the hydroxyethyl cellulose solution is then added and the agitation continued until a homogeneous oil-in-water emulsion is formed. The remaining portion of the hydroxyethyl cellulose solution is combined with the latex binder in order to give the latex the maximum protection while it is added to the pigmented solution. This latex-hydroxyethyl cellulose solution combination should be carefully added as the final step. The agitation should be stopped as soon as the latex is thoroughly incorporated. The mastic should be packaged in cans that have been lined to prevent rust and latex coagulation.
