These hardener blends can easily be prepared by dissolving salicylic acid (accelerator) in benzyl alcohol (or methylbenzyl alcohol) and finally adding IPD or TMD or a blend of both.
For the formulation of the so-called "in-situ adducts," an epoxy resin is reacted with a considerable excess of amine hardener. In this case the epoxy resin is added drop by drop while stirring and finally stirred for an additional 2 h. The production of blends is accompanied by a slight evolution of heat. The reaction should be controlled in order not to exceed 100 C.
In these blends the benzyl (or methylbenzyl) alcohol acts as a solvent for the accelerator (salicylic acid) and furthermore flexibilizes the resin/hardener system, since it does not evaporate and remains in the film after curing.
