Dissolve the emulsifiers and amine and oil inn the alcohol. Disperse the Carbopol in water until completely dispersed. (Note: It may be desirable to make a 2% stock solution of Carbopol.) Mix the two phases together. Notes: Inclusion of small quantities of the appropriate sequesterants and UV absorbers is useful in preventing light and trace metal catalyzed depolymerization of the Carbopol and the loss of viscosity which results. Care inn neutralizing to just below neutrality is also helpful in emulsion stability. At the same alcohol level, dissolving the emulsifiers and oils in the ethanol followed by the addition of the water, Carbopol, and amine will result in less opaque emulsions than will the method given. Additional alcohol or perfume tends to destabilize these systems so care must be taken to rebalance the emulsion when changes are made in the oil phase ingredients.
