To prepare the anionic emulsion,k the ammonium hydroxide is added to the water and the oleic acid is added to the plasticizer. The oleic acid-plasticizer mixture is then added slowly to the water and ammonium hydroxide solution with vigorous, high-shear agitation such as that obtained with an Eppenbach Homo-mixer. To prepare the nonionic emulsion, the "Triton" X100 is added to the water and the "Triton" X45 is added to the plasticizer. The Triton X45-plasticizer mixture is then added slowly to the "Triton" X100 and water again with vigorous, high-shear agitation. Either of the plasticizer emulsions can then be added to a latex with moderate mechanical stirring such as that obtained with a Lightnin mixer. The latex-plasticizer blend should be stirred for a couple of hours or allowed to stand overnight before it is used. Some plasticizer manufacturers offer their products as emulsions or in a form suitable for immediate dilution with water.
