Hydrochloric acid/40 ml/l Stannous chloride/10 g/l The author's experience with this solution is that the concentration of the two chemicals is of little importance so long as there is enough HCl in the solution to keep the stannous salt from hydrolyzing, and so long as purified chemicals and distilled or deionized water are used. The time the part is immersed in the solution is also of little importance, 1 to 5 minutes being standard, but longer times will give equally satisfactory results. The stannous fluoborate solution most used is. FORMULA No. Sn(BF4)2 (47%)/20 g/l HBF4 (42%)/50 ml/l HF (52%)/10 ml/l Room temperature, 2 minute immersion.

Both of these solutions are used with and without wetting agents. For hard-to-wet plastics such as the acrylics (which generally are roughened very little) and some of the newer plastics such as the polyimides, a wetting agent appears essential.
